>>In a packed Centennial gym on Friday, March 5, the girl’s basketball team defeated county rival Mt. Hebron 49-34 to win the 3A East regional championship. By winning the championship, the squad became the first sports team to win a regional title this year and the first girl’s basketball team to advance to the state semifinals in fourteen years.
Mt. Hebron took the early lead, scoring four unanswered point in the first minute. However, the Eagles soon countered with a three point play by senior co-captain, Julia Benjamin. The Vikings were able to maintain their lead throughout the first quarter, ending the quarter with the eight points versus Centennial’s five.
In the second quarter, the Eagles began their comeback. The team was able to break down the Viking’s defense through extremely accurate passing. On the defensive side of the ball, the entire team played aggressively, especially junior Kayla Kelly who came through with several key defensive plays. She also played well on offense, finishing the game with eight points. By halftime, Centennial was winning, 20-14.
A key difference between the two teams throughout the game was fouls. In the first half, a frustrated Mt. Hebron team racked up two times as many fouls as the Eagles. This resulted in several Vikings players getting in to foul trouble, something that would hurt the team in the second half. It also gave Centennial many scoring opportunities.& - Read more...
