As Centennial High School men’s varsity basketball players and coaches alike worked their way into Comcast Center at Maryland University on Thursday, March 10, 2011; a look of pure joy and awe overtook each person. This look was plastered on each face as players walked out of the tunnel onto the court to watch the game prior to theirs. This look quickly faded from each player and coach and was replaced by a look of determination when they realized why they were here at Comcast Center. “It’s always just been another basketball game” senior Aaron Adams said before he took the court. “It’s just one game. Coach [Hollwedel] always says to take it 1-0, after tonight we just want to be 1-0,” continued Adams. The goal was to upset the South Hagerstown High School (SHHS) Rebels and advance onto the state championship.
The Rebels’ last state championship tournament appearance occurred in 2004, with its last championship title in 1974. This year has been a historic one for Centennial, as its squad appeared for the first time in the state tournament.
