Easy Ways to Give this Holiday Season

By Molly Fuhrer

The holiday season is fast approaching and with the economy still having problems, it is getting harder to give to charities and to help others by donating money. Luckily, there are many ways that someone can give without spending extreme amounts of cash.

One simple way to do this is by going on freerice.com. On this interactive website, you can answer questions from a variety of subjects, and for each question answered correctly, ten grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. This is a fun way to donate because it is completely free and you get to answer challenging questions that may help prepare you for those upcoming SATs.

Another equally easy way to help this holiday season is by using the webiste givoogle.com. A branch of Google, Givoogle is exactly the same as every other search engine except that it donates money to cancer research each time 1,000 people log on to the site.  There is no simpler way to give this holiday season than by switching to Givoogle.  So next time you are looking for information for your history project or simply surfing the web, remember to use Givoogle. As it so cleverly advertises itself, “Search the web. Save the World.”

A more active way to help people in need this winter is by giving to the Salvation Army or other clothing and toy drives. Gently used clothing is greatly appreciated; especially warm coats. It is likely going to be a cold holiday season and warm items can help many to stay healthy. Some parents cannot afford to buy their children gifts this year, but that can easily be fixed by donating toys from your childhood that are still in good condition. This way you can let children have the toys that you don’t need anymore, and their parents don’t need to be worried about buying expensive gifts for their kids.

A great way to help people who are hungry is by donating your time at a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. You can socialize with people and make them happy while giving them food to eat for their holiday.

Most of us are very fortunate to live in such a nice area with a lot of advantages. Some people are much less fortunate though, and we should try and help out as much as we possibly can. Now you can help others to have a nice holiday season and help them to be safe and healthy this winter.
