Weekend Snow Buries Maryland
By Simone Jackson
White puffs of snow heavily cover the drooping trees, the cold air is bitter, and every surface is covered. People are stuck, bundled in their homes, and no cars roam the streets. The only sounds being heard are the strong winds, and neighbor’s attempts to snow blow their driveways.
According to WBALTV Insta-Weather reports, accumulations of snow are expected to be an additional 3-5 inches today, with a total of about 25-35 inches; with some locations expected to have more than others. Last night, accumulation rates were as high as 2-3 inches an hour, which covered the region in about two feet of snow this morning.
For many people, there are a lot of disadvantages to this winter blizzard. The Baltimore Sun reported that nearly 34,000 customers in the region were without power, and BGE crews have already restored power to many of them.
Plenty of Centennial students have been posting Facebook updates with their views and reactions of this 2010 blizzard. “I love how I can go sledding, and this is an excuse to be lazy,” exclaims sophomore, Brian Hillsley.
Although, some students have other opinions: “This weekend, I was supposed to go shopping for my upcoming trip to Disney for dance, but with the snow, I’m unable to get everything I need,” remarks Marie Visconage.
With all this talk about the hazards of traveling and being outside this weekend, students have different ideas of whether school will be put into place the following week. “I say off Monday, if it snows again Tuesday, we’ll have off then and Wednesday. Depending on how much, we could have off Thursday too!” says junior Mike Pekala.
Clearly, this blizzard has been an eye-opening event for all. Many students are trying to enjoy what Mother Nature has thrown at us. Hillsley chuckles, “It’s a snowpacalypse out there!”
