New DVD releases sure to keep you entertained

By Bo Shim

With another round of snow expected to come along, this time around you’ll want to prepare to entertain yourself in the confines of your home. And what better way than to watch the latest movies out on DVD? Oh, and let‘s all be thankful for On Demand in the case that no one can run to the store to pick up any of these movies.

Looking for a thriller? Check out The Box, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden, in which a family is presented a strange proposition of pressing various buttons in a box that will trigger the death of several people, but in return will grant the family millions of dollars. Just how far will they go? This movie was based on a 1970 short story, “Button, Button” by Richard Matheson, and adapted and directed by Donnie Darko’s Richard Kelly.

As for all you vampire fans out there, The Twilight Saga: New Moon won’t be coming out on DVD till next month but perhaps you should try a different type of vampire story (one that doesn’t involve a love triangle between a human, a vampire, and a werewolf.) Available on DVD now is Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. Also based on a popular series of books, the movie stars Chris Massoglia as Darren, an average sixteen-year-old transformed into a vampire after attending a traveling circus show, Cirque du Freak.  Darren ends up joining the circus himself where new found powers take him through an inexplicable journey that leads to an all out battle of vampires versus vampires. It’s a different twist to a vampire story, but if you’re still looking for Edward Cullen to creep in through the windows or Jacob Black to come running out of the woods shirtless, you’ll just have to wait until March 23rd.

Other DVD’s that have recently been released include the ever popular The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Rachel McAdams (or perhaps you’ll just retreat to watching The Notebook again for the fiftieth time) and Eric Bana, Zombieland, Couples Retreat, Law Abiding Citizen, The Informant, and many more.
