Celebrities: Just a pretty face or real talent?

By Amy Farb

In this day and age, celebrities need a lot more than just talent to be successful. Whether you are an actor, singer, or athlete, one thing is for certain: the prettier your face, the easier it can be to acquire fans. To some, this seems unfair, and maybe even a little prejudiced. But is it?

Although one could make the argument that the attractive celebrities can be the ones who are most popular, it is evident that stars like Taylor Swift and Apolo Ohno didn’t get where they are simply because of their looks. Obtaining any type of celebrity status requires not only talent but also dedication and lots of hard work as well. That is not to say that appearance doesn’t play any part in popularity. But, does it really downplay what celebrities have had to go through to obtain that popularity? Sophomore Sara Calvert doesn’t think so.

“Sometimes not being as attractive can help you too- Sanjaya anyone? Yeah, there are certain celebrities I like because of their style and the way they look. But it’s something to look up to.”

And really, what are celebrities if not people to look up to? What singer doesn’t dream of belting out a tune alongside Beyoncé Knowles? What basketball player doesn’t aspire to sinking a slam dunk reminiscent of Lebron James? Let’s face it: we count on celebrities to set the example we want to follow, not because of their outward appearance, but because of their skill.

Still, there are people out there who see celebrities only as a pretty face, and refuse to accept that fame doesn’t come as easy as applying a fresh coat of makeup. So haters, stop bashing the Taylor Lautners and Justin Biebers of the world, because one thing is for certain: jealousy isn’t attractive on anyone.
