Girl’s basketball team becomes regional champs

By Alice Crowe

In a packed Centennial gym on Friday, March 5, the girl’s basketball team defeated county rival Mt. Hebron 49-34 to win the 3A East regional championship.  By winning the championship, the squad became the first sports team to win a regional title this year and the first girl’s basketball team to advance to the state semifinals in fourteen years.

Mt. Hebron took the early lead, scoring four unanswered point in the first minute.  However, the Eagles soon countered with a three point play by senior co-captain, Julia Benjamin.  The Vikings were able to maintain their lead throughout the first quarter, ending the quarter with the eight points versus Centennial’s five.

In the second quarter, the Eagles began their comeback.  The team was able to break down the Viking’s defense through extremely accurate passing.  On the defensive side of the ball, the entire team played aggressively, especially junior Kayla Kelly who came through with several key defensive plays.  She also played well on offense, finishing the game with eight points.  By halftime, Centennial was winning, 20-14.

A key difference between the two teams throughout the game was fouls.  In the first half, a frustrated Mt. Hebron team racked up two times as many fouls as the Eagles.  This resulted in several Vikings players getting in to foul trouble, something that would hurt the team in the second half. It also gave Centennial many scoring opportunities.  Senior Julia Benjamin alone scored ten points off free throws.

In the third quarter, the Eagles were able to pull away, outscoring the Vikings 12-6.  Junior Kenitra Alston opened the half on a positive note for the Eagles.  After getting the ball, she dribbled up the court, beat her player with a behind-the-back dribble, and sank a jump shot.  The quarter continued with many more explosive plays on the part of Centennial.

The Eagles maintained their strong play into the fourth quarter, making all the baskets they needed to and working the ball up and down the court well.  Early on in the game, Mt. Hebron stand-out, senior Megan Schaaf, fouled out, leaving the Vikings without one of their key players.  Although Mt. Hebron continued to play well and slowed the Centennial offense, they were not able to catch up.

Once the game was done, each member of the Centennial team celebrated with their family and friends.  Each also was able to cut a piece of the net.  Coach Rob Slopek cut down the final piece and draped the entire net around his neck.

The win came after two other big victories against Atholton (37-36) and River Hill (48-41).  The Eagles will now face Western High School at UMBC on Thursday, March 11 in the 3A state semifinals.
